Traveling with currency and purchases, what rules do I need to know and what Customs declarations are required?


Your currency

On arrival in France:
- You can bring in unlimited amounts of currency, but
- You should declare to French Customs any currency, negotiable instruments or securities worth more than €7,622.45.

Tax and Duty on arrival

When arriving from a European Union country or French Overseas Territories
You do not have to pay any tax or duty on your purchases if they:
- Are for your personal use,
- Do not exceed the limits set for spirits and tobacco:

Cigarettes 800 units
Cigars 200 units
Spirits (Whisky, Gin...) 10 liters

When arriving from a country that is not a member of the European Union
You do not have to pay any tax or duty on your purchases if they:
- Are worth no more than €182.94 for passengers over the age of 15,
- Are worth no more than €91.42 for passengers under the age of 15,
- Do not exceed the following limits:

Tobacco 200 cigarettes or 100 cigarillos or 50 cigars or 250 g of smoking tobacco
Spirits One liter of sprits with an alcohol content of more than 22° or two liters with an alcohol content of less than 22°
Coffee 500 g of coffee or 200 g of coffee extract or essence
Tea 100 g of tea or 40 g of tea extract or essence
Perfume 50 g
Eau de toilette ¼ liter

Duty free purchases during your stay in France

You can reclaim Value Added Tax (TVA) from your purchases:
- if you live outside of the European Union,
- if you are over the age of 15.
When you leave France you will need to get your Export Sales Slips stamped by Customs at the airport.
